I. Types of Submissions

Authors may submit work to the journal for publication within the general science magazine portion. Submissions are accepted from any members of the Tufts community. Detailed below are the accepted submission types:

(a) Perspectives: Perspectives are short accounts up to 2000 words in length, discussing a particular area of research within a scientific field. They address specific recent areas of research, ranging from genomic studies, chemical analysis or robotics to psychology and quantum mechanics. Perspectives articles should be focused, covering recent work and offering insights into the field in question. The Perspectives section offers an opportunity for undergraduates involved in research to present their research and current work in the field without the formality of submitting a manuscript and for general topics of interest to be brought to the community. If you are interested in doing this, please contact TUSM for further information.

(b) Life in the Lab: TUSM welcomes short essays up to 1000 words in length on undergraduate research experiences in the laboratory. The staff believes that these pieces will help to enlighten other students about the laboratory experience and allow others to understand the unique complexities, discoveries, and setbacks associated with lab work. Creativity is encouraged.

(c) Science News (1/3 - 1 page in length): Selected science news articles of exciting new developments, policy, and other issues are welcomed for submission.

(d) Research Highlights (2 – 4 sentences): Selected two to four sentence summaries of interested research papers are welcomed from undergraduate, graduate, and faculty members.

(e) Featured Articles (3 or more pages in length): Science journalism style articles in the vein of “Scientific American” or “Discover” are welcomed.

(f) Historical Perspective (3 or more pages in length): Scientific history both at Tufts and beyond. Non-science majors, especially those interested in history, are encouraged to submit work

(e) Book Reviews (1- 2 pages): Reviews of scientific literature, both general and specific, are welcomed from all members of the community.

(g) Essays and Literature (1 - 3 Pages): The TUSM “Science and the World” section encourages Literary, Contemplative, Fictional, and poetical pieces from all Tufts community members reflecting on science. Movie and documentary reviews are welcomed.

II. Submitting the Article

Submissions to the magazine section must follow the following guidelines:

(a) Title Page: Please include a Title Page with title of the work, the names of all authors, the affiliations of all authors (year of study, major, etc.), and an email address at which the author may be readily contacted.

(b) Formatting: All magazine articles submitted should be in Times New Roman, size 12 font. Double spacing should be used for the submission. The Title Page must be separate from the remainder of the text and must be the only page with the authors names and contact information. All pages must be numbered and all hyperlinks functional.

(c) Figures and Graphics: All non-text figures and graphics should not be embedded in the manuscript text, but included at the end of the document after the References section. Legends must be included with all figures and figures should be of the highest resolution and quality available. Ensure that all figures are visible within the document and are not lost upon electronic transfer. Legends should either be located directly below each figure or as a separate set of pages with the figures labeled by legend key. Adapted figures and graphics must be cited to the original source.

(d) References: Two types of citation styles are acceptable, but the latter is preferred. References may be cited parenthetically using the Author-Date system or cited numerically. Numerical references are the preferred citation style of the journal and are a system in which each new reference should be assigned a unique superscript numeral, starting at 1, and increasing upwards. If the reference is repeated, the superscript associated with the first use of the reference should be used again. The specific academic citation format used is left to the author. Please avoid any footnotes or end-notes in the text and, instead, include them as supplemental references.

(e) Consent Form: If your work is selected for publication you will be required to submit the appropriate Consent for Publication Form. Additional details regarding delivery of the form will be provided at the time. A note of caution: Only forms that are hand signed by all parties and dated will be accepted as valid.

(d) Submissions: All submissions should be sent in .doc (or comparable) format to TuftsResearch@gmail.com and the ‘Subject’ line labeled as “Magazine Submission.”
